Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery: Week-by-Week Guide

Article #278 of 278

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, removes excess glandular tissue, fat, or skin to create a flatter and more defined chest. Recovery is gradual and may vary depending on the grade of gynecomastia, surgical technique and individual healing.

Week 1 – Rest & Early Healing

Swelling, bruising, tightness and mild discomfort are common. A compression garment may be advised to support healing and control swelling. Light walking is encouraged, while strenuous activities should be avoided.

For patients with Grade 4 & 5 saggy breasts, an NAC (Nipple-Areola Complex) lifting plaster may be used to support the nipple position and healing.

Week 2 – Swelling Begins to Reduce

Bruising generally starts to settle and movement becomes easier. Patients can gradually return to routine activities as advised by their surgeon. Cardio and heavy lifting should still be avoided until clearance.

Weeks 3–4 – Chest Contour Improves

The chest gradually begins to look flatter and more defined. Some firmness, swelling or temporary numbness may remain. Scar and wound care should continue as advised.

Weeks 5–6 – Gradual Return to Exercise

As healing progresses, patients may gradually resume exercise after medical clearance. Upper-body and chest workouts may require additional time depending on the extent of surgery.

3–6 Months – Final Results

Swelling continues to settle, and the chest contour becomes more natural as the tissues heal and scars mature. Final results may take several months.

Important Recovery Tips

  • 1 Week: No driving a car or bike.
  • 15 Days: No cardio exercises.
  • 45 Days: No heavy workouts or weight training.
  • 3 Weeks: Wear the compression garment as advised.
  • Collagen + Vitamin C: May be advised to support the healing process.
  • Massage: May be advised at the appropriate stage of recovery.
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.
  • Follow wound and scar-care instructions carefully.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle and stable weight.
  • Contact your surgical team if you experience unusual pain, increasing swelling, fever, bleeding or wound discharge.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Recovery varies from person to person. Patients undergoing liposuction, gland excision or treatment for significant sagging may have different recovery timelines. Your surgeon will provide personalized instructions based on your procedure and healing.
