Hirsutism
Don’t razor it.. Laser it!
Instead of the delecate and thin ‘peach fuss’ which covers a woman’s body if you have a lot of thick, dark and coarse hair growing in places where it does for men, then you have hirsutism. The cause may be anything from genetic or hormonal imbalance to medications. The most common causes being PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and use of minoxidil for treating hair loss.
Now that we know what causes it, it is quiet easy to assume that the treatment is straight forward too. But that is not always the case unfortunately. The medical management of the condition would be to treat the underlying cause, which would be to correct the hormonal imbalance, changing the medications used, etc. Despite all this some woman do complain that the treatments work on other symptoms except the thick, dark and coarse hair which would be seen on the face, chest, stomach and back commonly. This definitely has a certain degree of psycho-social impact on the woman and can also be emotionally sometimes, especially in the age group of 16-30years.
Although bleaching, shaving, tweezing, waxing, epilating and threading are the most frequently used methods of hair removal due to their easy availability and lower cost. This does not necessarily provide consumers with a long lasting satisfying result. Hence, laser hair reduction is one of the most promising methods of controlling the unwanted hair in patients with hirsutism. This is due to the mechanism in which the laser hair reduction machine works, it attacks the melanin (black pigment) in the hair and destroys it. In hirsutism the hair is dark and thick which means an abundance in melanin, this makes is easy of the laser to identify this pigment and destroy it.
