Lip correction procedures can be surgical as well as non surgical and are intended at altering the lip size and appearance employing either reduction or augmentation techniques.

• Lip reduction is a procedure for surgically reducing the size of abnormally large or protruding lips.

Indication. You may opt for a lip reduction surgery if you face one or more of the below issues:

Preoperative instructions. You will be advised to stop smoking at least four weeks before surgery. Besides, the surgeon shall advice you to avoid certain medications such as Aspirin (blood thinning agents).

Procedure. Lip Reduction surgery at Chennai Plastic Surgery, is performed as an outpatient procedure. It is carried out under local or IV sedation and takes between 30 to 40 minutes per lip. The surgeon will make a horizontal incision or cut on the inner sides of the lip. A desired amount of fat and soft tissue is removed and the incision closed with dissolvable sutures.

Recovery instructions. Recovery might take up to 7 or 10 days depending on the extent of swelling. A few exceptional clients may have excessive swelling and require longer recovery periods. You are advised to sleep with your head elevated till the swelling settles. As cuts are made inside the mouth, eating might initially be a challenge – non acidic foods may help to reduce discomfort and sensitivity. Lip augmentation can be achieved through both surgical and non surgical means. In this section we shall discuss surgical method of fat transfer.

Indication. Lip augmentation using fat transfer is most ideal when you have a preference for natural alternatives over other synthetic fillers in the market. Fat is the most ideal material for lip augmentation due to the reduced risk or rejection unlike the other synthetic fillers.

Procedure. At Chennai Plastic Surgery, the lip augmentation procedure is performed by our Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons under General Anesthesia. Fat releases several growth factors bringing about formation of natural tissue at the site where it is injected.

Our surgeons harvest the desired amount of fat through liposuction from suitable regions of your body and inject them into the lips with a syringe and blunt needle. The fat is layered on to the lip by lifting the lip skin layer and injecting the fat. This leave behind only prick marks. A portion of the fat tends to be reabsorbed.

Recovery instructions. The lips tend to swell heavily following the procedure but shall subside in a few days to 3 weeks. The outcome is supple and natural lips.

Risks. This is a relatively low-risk procedure. As body’s natural fat is used, the chances of an allergic reaction are almost nil. However, fat transfer may have lumping or scarring effects. The length of time that a fat transfer may stay is highly variable and depends on how close it is to a blood supply or how much the area moves.
