With the development of highly advanced surgical procedures, it is now possible to restore the youthful and perky appearance of breasts. Each year, a wide variety of women undergo breast lift procedures to achieve perkier and shapelier breasts.

Why Do Breasts Sag?

There are several factors that contribute to degradation in the structural firmness and symmetry of the breast tissues. These include hormonal fluctuations, the aging process, genetics, weight gain or loss, and breastfeeding.

There are a lot of women who are unsatisfied with the sagging of their breasts and are looking for solutions to restore perkiness. A breast lift, or mastopexy, can be performed to reshape the breasts, lifting them and creating symmetry. To cater to the needs of women who are looking for breast contouring, doctors the world over suggest a breast lift.

What Is a Breast Lift?

Generally, a breast lift procedure involves a removal of the excess loose skin of the breast and a simultaneous tightening of the remaining skin. As a result, the breast is raised to a perkier position with a better shape and contours. The areolae and nipples can also be resized and repositioned with this procedure.

Breast Lift Options

There are several types of breast lift that a plastic surgeon can perform based upon the degree of breast ptosis, or sagging, in each individual’s case. The degree of ptosis is determined by the location of the areola with respect to the sternum and the inframammary fold.

Doctors can perform the donut breast lift, the lollipop breast lift, or the anchor breast lift to raise the breasts. The main differences between each of these techniques include the incision pattern and the amount of tissue removed.

The donut breast lift is ideal for a minor or moderate degree of sagging and removes a smaller amount of tissue. This involves creating two concentric circles around the areola. The skin between these circles is removed. When the incisions are closed with stitches, this elevates the nipple-areolar complex to a higher position.

For greater degrees of sagging, other breast lift options are preferred. The lollipop breast lift is best for cases where a moderate degree of sagging is occurring. After an incision is created around the areola, a vertical incision is made down to the breast crease. Tissue is then removed.

When a larger amount of tissue must be removed, doctors typically choose the anchor, or inverted-T, breast lift. The incisions are similar to a lollipop breast lift, with the addition of a curving horizontal incision along the breast crease. After this, tissue removal can take place.

The Results

The breast lift procedure facilitates a tightening of the skin and a lifting of the breasts, areolae, and nipples. The breasts no longer droop, instead looking perkier and more youthful.

After the procedure, there will be a degree of swelling and bruising, which will fade away during the breast lift recovery process. Patients must wait until all swelling is gone before their full results will be apparent.
