Trending in Jowl Sculpting – Buccal Fat Pad Removal or Reduction (BFR)
If you are someone with overly full cheeks (chubby cheeks), you can probably consider a buccal fat pad removal / reduction. The procedure is aimed at surgically tapering and trimming the cheek area. It involves trimming a discrete mass of fat located within the cheek and not complete removal of the buccal fat pad.
One should bear in mind that the reduction of buccal fat doesn’t make the face skinny. Often, younger patients approach a Plastic Surgeon with the expectation that the procedure will help them get rid of the complete volume in the lower face. It is not so. It only gives the cheek bones a more sculpted appearance.
Buccal fat prolapse in aged people is yet another indication for buccal fat pad removal.
The procedure:
Buccal Fat Pad removal can be done under general or local anaesthesia. The surgeon creates a small incision in the cheek wall lining the oral cavity. Using blunt dissection, the fat pad that is distinct in both colour and consistency from the surrounding fat is gently teased out of its compartment. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. Nice compression dressing is done and retained for 24 hours.
Post-Operative advice:
-
Salt restricted liquid diet for 3 days.
Betadine mouth rinse 3 to 5 times a day.
Soft diet for 3 to 7 days.
Compression garment to be worn at all times for 7 days, and then in the night time alone for the next 10 days.
The complete results are evident after 3 months.
